March 29 – Kigali. What is it about small, struggling nations that they seem to be a magnet for ambitious but socially inept Americans? It took all of about five minutes in the lobby of the Novotel Hotel in Kigali to meet Scott. A pot-bellied medical device sales rep from Kansas City, Scott spoke a few decibels louder than necessary. Leaning back in his tight fitting jeans and blue t-shirt, he wanted to tell us about the hot dance club down the road and volunteered advice on where to get hooked up. When I asked him why he picked Rwanda to favor with his presence, his studied assessment was that “It’s just like Mexico, only cheaper.”
It’ll take a lot of good work to off-set the negative American stereotypes reinforced by ambassadors like Scott…
