Recently, as part of the renovations to the Brown Line, the new Sedgwick Station has opened to many anxious commuters sick of walking through that sketchy alley to the temporary station. With excitement and glee I really enjoyed the first few weeks of this new station design. It has an attention to aesthetic detail that I except from Chicago city projects and really is a vast improvement over the temporary station. But, all good things must come to an end… and so my enthusiasm for Sedgwick Station has ended.
You see, there was one glaring error made in choosing the materials for the station entry. The fun started the first week of December with the first real snow. Apparently the designers of this new & fabulous train station had convinced the city to spring for laminate hard wood floors for the entry of the station, never considering that all those snow boots and “winter gross” would render the floor beyond slippery, quite un-usable and possible warped beyond use by mid spring.
I am happy to report that the city of Chicago has made temporary strides to alleviate all of us endangered commuters, mainly hiring a person to stand at the entrance and say to every passerby “careful the floors are quite slippery” as well as implementing a restaurant kitchen non-slip mat system leading from the door to the turnstiles.
I personally can’t wait for the announcement of the station closing for the replacement of the entry floors. It may mean a few days of sketchy alley walks but it is still better than starting the springtime with a broken back.
