Adobe is handing out some gifts

Here is the official press release on BlazeDS:

Adobe announced plans to release source code for its remoting and messaging technologies under a new open source product named BlazeDS. Now, developers can easily connect to back-end distributed data, as well as push data in real-time to Adobe® Flex™ and Adobe AIR™ applications, for more responsive rich Internet application (RIA) experiences. Previously available only as part of Adobe LiveCycle® Data Services ES, the technologies included in BlazeDS, along with the Action Message Format (AMF) protocol specification, are being contributed to open source under the Lesser General Public License (LGPL v3), and are available immediately as public betas on Adobe Labs.

The documentation is light and the examples are thin right now, but Adobe seems to be making all the right moves to strengthen its development community and make RIA development less expensive and open. You can download the beta on Adobe labs.

Another gift from Adobe this holiday season is the release of Brio. Brio is a web meeting service designed for small collaborative meetings for individual professionals and small businesses. It’s pretty much a stripped down version of Breeze (AKA Adobe Acrobat Connect). The interface is looking good, but in my testing, the service seemed a bit spotty. Sometimes it would load just fine, other times it would hang, and on some machines, I couldn’t get past the login screen. You may want to let Brio bake a little longer, but be sure to check out Acrobat Connect. It offers, in my opinion, the best online meeting experience. It’s also seen some recent price cuts too, so you can get started for just $40 a month.
