On Christmas Day, we took a look back at the best albums of 2007. Today, we’re taking a look ahead at the albums of ’08. Will any of them make the best-of lists 11 months from now? Eh, hard to say. Just bring ‘em on, and let Pitchfork sort ‘em out.
The Breeders
Mountain Battles is due out in April. According to the press release, part of the album was recorded in Chicago at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio.
Portishead
Ten years after their sophomore effort, Portishead finishes junior year. The album is due out this April in the UK. That gives the industry another 7 months or so to get it a US release in ’08. That should be enough time. Shouldn’t it?
Radiohead
On most 2007 lists by virtue of the quality of its songs and a digital-download release in the fall, Radiohead’s In Rainbows gets its official CD release today, making it eligible, by my lights, for 2008 lists. Hopefully the year in music is good enough to make an In Rainbows reappearance unnecessary. Either way, it will certainly be the best album of 2008 for the next 24 hours.
My Bloody Valentine
The most-anticipated album of 2008 might not even happen. Then again, it might.

I am soooo excited about that Portishead album!
The new Magnetic Fields album should be out any day now.
Also, Kevin Shields saying that a new MBV record will be coming out soon is about as meaningful as 3D Realms releasing that new Duke Nukem Forever trailer.
Fair point, Jon. But people really seem to believe him this time. By the way, I’ll let you know when /Chinese Democracy/ is coming out.
