I’m not normally a gadget person when it comes to jogging. Part of the beauty of jogging, after all, is its DIY ethic—just throw on a pair of shoes and go run around outside. It’s about as punk-rock as physical fitness can get.
However, I was pretty intrigued when I first heard about Japan’s Thanko Vonia headband. The headband fits an iPod Shuffle and uses bone conduction to transmit sounds through your skull to your inner ear. No unruly cords to deal with, no slippery earbuds.
Best of all, it doesn’t drown out ambient noise. This would be a nice safety measure for Chicago winters, when icy sidewalks exile runners to bike lanes and oncoming traffic.
Unfortunately, I think it looks a little too much like a bandage. And I simply can’t bring myself to run around in traffic looking like I’ve already sustained a massive head injury.
