Two of the big announcements from Steve Jobs’ WWDC 2007 keynote address were about Safari.
First, it’s coming to Windows. Second, it’s the “SDK” for the iPhone.
As a Web developer, having Safari available on Windows will make unit testing somewhat easier, but it remains the worst of the current batch of browsers regardless of platform. On top of that, it’s a long way from ready to go gold.
As for the iPhone support for Web apps, that was basically just spin for the fact that the iPhone is a closed system. Web apps can be great – people have building them and running them on phones for years – but they can’t hook into the resources of the device itself (local storage, that cool multi-touch screen, etc.).
So, will Apple repeat the mistakes of the past regarding third-party development? Can the iPhone succeed without that support? Will the Windows version of Safari woo enough users to compete with the major browsers? Who knows, we might be surprised.
