    Democracy is messy. Voting is never as clean as we would hope, candidates often appeal to our basest instincts, and the transition from clan or religious-based alignment to issue-based political parties among young democracies can take an entire generation.

    Fortunately, here in India there is a vibrant and independent press that seems to hold the political process accountable to live up to its highest ideals.

    Times of IndiaThere are numerous national and regional newspapers, with The Times of India being the grand-daddy (established in 1838) of them all. It can be sobering to read about the daily political and business scandals. And yet, we are reading about them. They aren’t hidden but in fact out for the country to see and respond. It makes for a vigorous daily debate on the future of India as it takes its place among the world’s greatest economic engines. And democracies.
