Greg Kot and Jim Derogatis, co-hosts of Chicago-based rock talk show Sound Opinions, took advantage of Robert Schneider’s recent trip to Chicago with The Apples in Stereo to get him in studio and contribute to a retrospective of the Elephant 6 recording collective. Elephant 6 began with four guys in Ruston, Louisiana trading tapes in junior high, and has given the world the music of the aforementioned Apples, Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control and, after a relocation to Athens, Georgia, more music from Of Montreal and Elf Power. If Elephant 6 is a term you’ve never heard, Sound Opinions’ retrospective program is a great introduction to the music and the personalities behind it. To my mind, it’s a fantastic, hope-filled example of dedication to a creative vision and the friendships that anchor it.
