  1. Frankfurt is the Chicago of Europe

    June 9, 2007

Centrally located on the continent with a robust financial industry and a river. And an airport that connects to everywhere. Frankfurt that is. I’ve been through the Frankfurt Airport many times, always on my way to somewhere else. Like most of the people who go through O’Hare Airport in Chicago.

Several years ago, I realized that downtown Frankfurt is only 10 minutes by cab from the airport. So now, even if the layover is only three hours, I will stow my laptop, go through Immigration (a breeze), grab a cab, and head for downtown. I’ve done it late at night (there’s a great restaurant called Paolo’s right on the river Open 6pm till 4am with a late night kitchen), on a Sunday afternoon in December (strolled through the old city Christmas Market sipping mulled wine), and on an early evening in May, admiring the handsome touring barges lined up on the Rhine.

This morning I had six hours in Frankfurt before the second leg to Delhi. Should I book a tour? Take a train to Düsseldorf? OK, no need to get crazy. How about a leisure breakfast Along the Rhine along the river under a spectacular blue German sky? Instead of a 15 Euro cab ride, I hopped on the train for 3 Euros instead. Takes 15 minutes to get to center city.

So the next time you are passing through Frankfurt Airport on your way to someplace else, allow yourself a little side trip downtown. It’s worth the trip, cab or train.
