Haptics is the science and art of applying touch sensation to human interaction with computers. For quite a few years, game contollers have incorporated “force feedback”, which is really just a fancy way of saying that it vibrates. You crash your car, it vibrates. You get tackled by Urlacher, it vibrates. I think you get my point. This type of haptic feedback doesn’t take into account texture, weight, momentum, etc.. Medical researchers and high-end CAD operators have been utilizing these devices for a while, but they’ve never been within the financial reach of your average consumer. Novint Technologies is changing that with the release of the Falcon. It’s a device unlike any I’ve seen and I’ve got a feeling it needs to be touched to get a sense of it’s capabilities. I’d love to get a hold of one and design some novel interfaces that take advantage of 3D touch. I’d imagine if you featured one of these at a tradeshow as an interface to your digital marketing pieces, you’d garner quite a bit of attention.
