  1. In India, you need the soundtrack

    June 18, 2007

Pictures may say a thousand words, but here in India you need a sound track to tell the complete story.

We’ve been all over India in the past ten days, from Delhi and Agra to Chennai (Madras), Mumbai (Bombay) to Kalkutta (Calcutta), and now Bangalore. In every city or rural town, there is a constant chorus of car horns. traffic lined upPeople are on the move, and the accelerator seems to be tightly connected to the horn.

Many are very unique sounding. Like customized ring tones for cell phones, there seems to be a vibrant after market for horn tones.

Pictures, as a moment in time, also don’t capture the amazing dance of autos, rickshaws, buses, motorcycles, and people. In and out, dodging and weaving, everyone is on the move.

The amazing thing is how easy-going everyone seems to be to this cutting and merging. weaving thru traffic

Unlike in the US, where the horn seems to be used more to express irritation at another driver’s actions, here in India, it is used as a friendly warning that you are coming through. Pedestrians jump out of the way with inches to spare. Drivers cut in and out of traffic, beeping all the way. And there is never an outburst of anger or frustration.

rickshaw on the moveWhether the mode of transportation is a new “auto-rickshaw” or the traditional rickshaw, there is room for everyone. This seems to be consistent with an overall approach to life here in India: the country is in a hurry to grow, but it hasn’t sacrificed its friendliness and good nature to get there.
