  1. It's bicycle season!

    April 5, 2007

Do you know how I can tell? It’s April, the sun is out, and I weigh ten pounds more than I did last year. So it MUST be bicycle season immediately, or I’m going to end up wearing sweatpants to the beach. Unfortunately for me and my fat ankles, my bike is broken. Truthfully it isn’t broken, it died. It died a slow, icy death in front of my apartment. I left it out in the snow all winter, so technically I think I committed bicycle manslaughter. Don’t worry, it’s in a better place now (my back porch) and it’s time to move on.

This weekend I plan on revisiting Working Bikes at 1125 S. Western Ave. Working Bikes is a not-for-profit cooperative which diverts bicycles from the waste stream in Chicago by repairing them for sale and charity. I bought my first set of Chicago wheels there for forty bucks and that bike lasted me a good long while, right up until I left it to die in a pile of snow.

Most of the bikes are $50-$100 and in good condition. The volunteers there make sure every bike can be ridden home straight from the shop. Don’t forget you’d be doing a good thing for those less fortunate (and your cholesterol).
