Yet more companies are embracing the flexibility of ActionScript and Flex. It is really quite interesting what can be accomplished with these languages, and how existing applications can be enhance with new capabilities.

The Discovery Channel, together with EffectiveUI, have build a fun and informative FLEX 3 application called Earth Live. It is a really cool way to combine user interactions with layered data. You can view weather patterns on a movable globe, or just see where the latest news stories originate across the globe.

Yahoo! has released their Maps API which uses an ActionScript 3.0 component. Developers can easily reference this new component in their FLEX or Flash applications to create platform independent applications. Uses of this new API include displaying and navigating Yahoo! Maps, listening to map events, adding map markers, drawing in Flash within a geo-context, searching Yahoo! listings, and calculating distances. I could see some fun mash-ups coming out of this.
