But you’re just going to miss seeing the really good stuff.
At the risk of being trampled by the post-Thanksgiving hoards, I’m headed to the Field Museum this weekend to check out ”Maps: Finding Our Place in the World,” part of the city’s Festival of Maps.
The exhibit features a compendium of maps from around the world and throughout history. It will be interesting to contrast present realities with their earlier interpretations, such as the 1982 map of the first internet (pictured above). The Rand McNally Photo-Auto Maps should be somewhat amusing, in the context of today’s G.P.S. navigation devices. These pamphlets typically consisted of a photo of the road taken from the driver’s seat, accompanied by a hand-drawn cupid’s arrow indicating direction and a caption imploring you to “TURN LEFT AND WEST.”
The exhibit runs through January 28, 2008. Order advanced tickets here.
