  1. MTV pulls the plug on Flash

    June 6, 2007

MTV, like it or not, has been a cultural force for decades. No matter your opinion of the programming they offer, there is no doubt they lead the pack in innovative ideas, from the video as musical medium to the introduction of reality television.

Well, around the beginning of this year MTV launched an all-Flash verison of their website, with every bell and whistle you can imagine for a teen thought leader. Users were surprised to see enhancements and upgrades galore, but seemed to have problems with the basics like searching and viewing content.

Surprisingly, MTV listened. MTV.com completely trashed their shiny new site in favor of an all-CSS version. The MTV Labs Blog discusses the change in detail, and has been making improvements based on user response ever since the re-relaunch.

What a great example of an innovative company deciding to ignore their own opinion of what’s cool in favor of a highly usable (and still very cool) presentation.
