  1. Mystery man at Millennium Park

    July 17, 2007

When the Decemberists play with the Grant Park Orchestra at Chicago’s Millennium Park tomorrow night, the conductor will be Sean O’Laughlin, the man who arranged Colin Meloy’s pop songs for orchesetra. I scoured the web for more information about O’Laughlin, and found this audio piece from the Boston Globe. In the four-minute piece, O’Laughlin demonstrates his arranging process using a Cowboy Junkies song he arranged.

The short written introduction to the piece says O’Laughlin “went from Symphony Hall bartender to specialist in musical arrangements for rock bands playing alongside classical orchestras.” That has to be an oversimplification, right? I’d like to know what O’Laughlin’s professional journey really was like. If anybody can point us to the answer, email us at blog at closerlook dot com.
