But you’re just going to miss seeing the really good stuff.
I love going to bookstores.
I love the smell. I love the quiet. I love that I can read all of the post secrets in a comfy chair and then not buy the book (I am a terrible person, I know).
Borders seems to know that the “bookstore experience” is what they have going for themselves over Half.com and Amazon, and now, they’ve found a really cool way to bring that experience to the internet on their new online bookstore .
The biggest change to their site is the “magic shelf” that appears on the homepage. You can scroll left, right, up and down on this dynamic “shelf” and see images of book, music and movie covers like you were actually browsing in a bookstore. Signing up for an account and tracking your purchase will help the shelf pick out a selection tailored to your buying history along with new releases. Clicking on a book will give you customer reviews a blank out of 5 star rating and the back-cover summary of the book. The site also lets you tie your rewards points to your account so that this information is always easily accessible when you log in.

While, none of these features (personalized book lists, customer reviews, etc) are exactly new to these kinds of sites, Borders has been able to synthesize them in a really fun way that makes you want to keep browsing even after you’ve made a purchase.
Now, if they can only figure out how to include that new book smell…

Most of the stores are now online and online shopping is very easy now.
I like how the overall style “feels” like typed words with the fonts, textures and ephemera in the backgrounds. I like the idea of the Magic Shelf but it’s not nearly as segmented as Amazon. It’s harder to rate items than Amazon too, so it can’t learn as quickly. One of my Shelf suggestions was “Since you like Stephanie Meyer…” when I have no idea who that person is. Hopefully they’ll be tweaking things like that as they go.
