  1. Please excuse my trash talkin

    December 26, 2007

Ryan Mason, closerlooker and newlywed, recently started a conversation in our office around a recent registry gift received. I felt it worth sharing with all of you.

Upon receiving a simplehuman trash can as a gift for their nuptials, the couple exhibited excitement usually not wasted on trash receptacles. (For those who haven’t experienced the simplehuman trash experience, it is well worth the expense of buying one.) Their smiles faded as they finished unpacking the box to find a free trial of the special sure fit bags that are used for the can. “This thing needs special bags?!?” they exclaimed with confusion and outrage!

Upon running out of these “fancy pants” bags, Ryan went on the search for refills. Not finding them at any grocery store, the Internet was the likely next place to look. This is when Ryan’s new world of trash really got messy. A few refill packs were equal in cost to the very expensive trashcan and with the extra shipping cost to order online, it was out of control in this couple’s mind.

You see, as a new owner of the simplehuman trash can, Ryan was not yet aware of a feature in all simplehuman trash cans; the “bag tuck” in the inner can, this allows any excess bag to be tucked out of sight. Even though this feature is talked about on the website and maybe even on the package, the inclusion of the fancy bags created enough user confusion to mentally limit the options available to them; the assumption was easily made that the bags are required for the trashcan and no others will fit. I think this was a good assumption to make, considering that other trashcans don’t come with their own bags.

So if you know a new owner of a simplehuman trash can, please donate your time to educate them on the “bag tuck” feature; we will all benefit from the awareness in the end. I know Ryan and the new Mrs. Mason are thrilled to know about this feature before wasting their first year of marriage searching for fancy trash bags.
