  1. Proceed and Be Bold!

    October 13, 2008

arpanetChicago independent film collective Brown Finch Films has posted a trailer for their latest feature-length documentary film, entitled Proceed and Be Bold! (Note: the trailer contains one brief moment of coarse language that may not be suitable for work.)

The subject of the film is letterpress printer Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr. (pictured above). Proceed and Be Bold! takes a multi-faceted look at Kennedy’s abandonment of a comfortable life as an AT&T “computer guy” in favor of a less secure existence as a journeyman letterpress artist. The film also examines the virtues and attitude of Kennedy’s printed work, as well as what the man and his work have to say about race in America.

Director and Brown Finch Films collective member Laura Zinger interviewed Kennedy’s family, friends and colleagues, including Jim Sherraden of Hatch Show Print. In addition, Kennedy himself sat (or rather walked and paced and printed) for interviews. But the real star of the film may be Kennedy’s work. Held lovingly in the hands of admirers and well captured by Director of Photography Michelle Kaffko, the prints make their own visual testament to Kennedy’s boldness.

The trailer has captured something of my attention and imagination. I’m going to see this film if I get the chance. Upcoming screenings of Proceed and Be Bold! are listed on the Brown Finch Films site. For more information on the film, from budget to a complete list of those interviewed, check out the press kit.
