  1. The elder statesmen of punk

    March 9, 2007

News that Iggy Pop and The Stooges are playing in Chicago on April 15th reminded me that our opportunities to see the founders of punk live and in good sound are likely waining. I need no further reminder than a show I saw in at Metro on October 15, 2001. Nobody thought that it would be Joe Strummer’s last show in Chicago. His collaboration with The Mescaleros had him producing some of the most vital music of his career. But just over a year after I saw him live for the first time, he was gone. Speaking of Strummer, Julien Temple’s forthcoming documentary—which premiered at Sundance—has me pretty excited.
