But you’re just going to miss seeing the really good stuff.
Fellow Work + Play contributor Jon Varner and closerlook freelance writer Ryan Bartelmay contributed a few titles that escaped Monday’s rockumentary dragnet:
Don’t Look Back- D.A. Pennebaker’s Dylan documentary, which includes Dylan’s hotel-room-hootenany thumping of Scottish popstar Donovon.
The Filth and the Fury – Julian Temple’s second crack at the Sex Pistols documentary. The first was The Great Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle. I’ve been looking forward to seeing Temple’s Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten. It debuted at the most recent Sundance to lukewarm reviews, but after reading Passion is a Fashion, I’m hungry for more Strummer info, so even two stars would be good enough for me.
The Decline of Western Civilization – the document of L.A. punk.
American Hardcore – Paul Rachman’s history of the American hardcore-punk scene in the early 1980s.
Some Kind of Monster – Following Metallica from 2001-2003, directors Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky saw the band’s true colors as they fought themselves and each other, sometimes in the presence of their on-call psychiatrist.
The Devil and Daniel Johnston – Says Bartelmay: “This movie is one of the best I’ve seen in a while. A must see.”
