  1. Serious Meat

People get pretty emotional when it comes to barbeque. Tensions can easily run high when arguing your favorite place (the one you know definitively as “the best”) against someone else’s top spot.

Late-night conversation recently turned meat-based once again. The participants were BBQ vets, first establishing our meat-cred by name-dropping Southern favorites: Atlanta’s Fat Matt’s Rib Shack. Memphis’ Neely’s and Rendezvous Ribs. We had a level playing field and knew each other’s sensibilities to be sound.
    Southern BBQ
I voiced upstart Smoque on the northwest side as a personal favorite. Others vehemently brushed them off in favor of Smoke Daddy (my second fave). Southsiders rallied around old-schooler Leon’s. And of course, summerfest fixture Robinson’s was bandied about (I find them overrated).

In the end, there’s never a consensus winner. But the best part is there’s never really a loser. Knowing too many BBQ shacks is a great problem to have.

For those out in the western burbs, Uncle Bub’s in Westmont has my favorite BBQ. I used to make the trip out of the city just to go there. Now that I live out there, I go there every morning for a pulled pork breakfast sandwich. (That’s not true)

Next time you’re in St. Louis, seek out Mama’s Coal Pot (http://tinyurl.com/37fuuw), a BBQ stand just north of the main strip in the Loop. It’s the best I’ve had in the city and they even have crispy snoots!
