Yesterday, Nine Inch Nails released Ghosts I-IV, a collection of 36 new instrumental tracks that are available to the world under a Creative Commons license. What’s that mean? Well, first off the music is 100% DRM free. That’s exciting. Second, and most intriguing, is that you can pretty much use the music how ever you like in a non-commercial project. I’m guessing there are going to be a lot of indie movies with a Nine Inch Nails soundtrack. What an innovative move by a forward thinking artist.

As an added twist, NIN’s servers crashed under the inevitable Diggs of free music. So Trent himself uploaded a copy to The Pirate Bay – recently named the top spot on the interwebs to download media of all kinds. You have to hand it to him, the guy knows how to start his own publicity machine. PS, the first nine (free) tracks are pretty good, I’ll throw down a five spot for the whole thing.
