Fifty years ago today, Russia launched Sputnik I into orbit and the world entered the Space Age. It was a triumph of industrial design that inspired lamps, clocks, furniture, fashion, etc., for the next decade. That design came from Sergei Korolyov and it was based on symbolic reasons as much as scientific ones. Sputnik was a simple icon signifying that the future was now.
Beyond its scientific, political, and graphical importance, Sputnik also ushered in the Information Age. Its radio transmitters sent out beeps that could be heard around the world. Telstar, the world’s first communications satellite, and Arpanet, the predecessor of the Internet, were both developed in direct response to Sputnik. It’s difficult today for us to imagine that instant communication around the world was simply impossible just 50 years ago.
So take some time today to celebrate Sputnik and how it changed our world.
