  1. Take me out to the ball game

    April 9, 2008

Improv Everywhere is a group of artists and everyday people who perform massive human based installations providing commentary on the mundane tasks of everyday life. Their tag line is aptly: We cause scenes.

In their most recent venture, they decided to ring in the baseball season with high spirits and treat some little leaguers in California to a real “Big League” experience. Unbeknownst to the teams, coaches or parents, Improv Everywhere researched the players ahead of time and using player stats and even nicknames; they produced and hosted a play by play commentary during game play broadcast over a jumbotron screen. They also had fans show up wearing team colors and holding sign boards of their favorite players and even had some large men paint letters of the team names on their stomachs for the true stadium game feel. The event would of course not be complete without mascots, and the Goodyear blimp.

The events staged by Improv Everywhere are always stellar. Providing great examples of how interrupting everyday life with the unexpected, whimsical or in some cases bizarre can bring awareness, wonderment, or just a little delight to an otherwise normal day. Some of my favorite missions are the spontaneous musical in an LA food court, the 5 minute freeze in Grand Central Station and my personal favorite Mobile Desktop, where coffee drinking patrons brought desktop computers and set up for work in a busy Starbucks location.
