A few years ago, Art Lebedev Design Studio introduced a concept that tech geeks went wild for. It was a keyboard in which every key was a tiny OLED screen therefore making configuration options virtually limitless. It also introduced the concept of a keyboard that adapts based on the application you are using. The usefulness for the normal user was not that apparent, but designers, musicians, video editors, and gamers could instantly see the impact. Great idea. After a large amount of publicity, Lebedv said they were going to make it happen. I said to myself, “$250 and I will buy it”. Well it’s a few years later, but they are now taking preorders. Sweet, let me just get out my credit card… Oh, it’s $1,500! Nevermind. It’s a real shame when companies can’t find the right price point for a truly innovative product (iPhone). Granted, it’s probably not the cheapest thing to produce, but at that price you’ve basically limited yourself to the high-end video and audio professionals that are still spending loads of money with Digidesign.
If your pockets aren’t as deep as the Mariana Trench, Apple and Logitech have a couple attractive alternatives.
