  1. The Mirror of Roman Magnificence

As previous posts have shown, closerlook bloggers are really into Chicago’s Festival of Maps. If you can’t make it into town or are too lazy to trek down to Hyde Park, you can still check out the University of Chicago Special Collections exhibit of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae.

The Speculum wasn’t a specific book, but rather a customizable publication of prints that served as a fancy tour guide for 16th Century Europeans. Or as we might pitch it today, a scalable modular solution tailored to each client’s goals.

The online exhibit features zoomable hi-res images that you can view through guided tours – or you can just search by subjects like “aedicules”, “clerestories”, and “dogs”.
