  1. You weren't in Cleveland

    December 4, 2007

You Weren't ThereI was prevented from attending the premiere of You Weren’t There, a documentary film about Chicago’s punk scene from 1977-1984, by Thanksgiving-weekend festivities with family. (How punk-rock is that?) But the filmmakers hold out hope for more screenings and a DVD release.

You Weren’t There may be a particularly useful document because Chicago has yet to take its place in punk history. The city tends to be viewed as punk flyover by the uninitiated and the casual fan, largely because few Chicago punk bands made it big nationally. But New York and L.A. weren’t the only centers of influence on the punk world. Detroit, as home of the MC5 and the Stooges, has long had its place at the heart of punk’s origins. And, according to a book I’m reading now, Clinton Heylin’s Babylon’s Burning, the scene in Cleveland—Cleveland!—had major influence on punk in the U.S. and abroad.
